Corydon Indiana Hotel Located in Historical First Indiana State Capital!

History Buffs! Look out! There’s a new and exciting piece of American history you just cannot afford to miss!

Corydon, Indiana, may seem like just another small town, but Corydon has a unique history that should interest many. Corydon was founded in 1808 and was never a town to undergo a dull moment. Even before its founding, Corydon was a central location. For example, in the American Revolution, Corydon was captured by George Rogers Clark from the British. Such historical legacy can be researched in the Harrison County Public Library, less than one mile from the Holiday Inn Express in Corydon.

Many probably know Corydon as Indiana’s first state capital. It was indeed the capital of the Indiana territory from May 1, 1813 to December 11, 1816. The territory then became a state and the capital remained in Corydon until January 10, 1825 when it moved to its present location in Indianapolis. Visitors to the area may enjoy the tours of historical sites, such as the first state capitol building, the Constitutional Elm, the historical houses of the Governor and many more sites. You can pick up brochures or an over-sized map of the historic downtown Corydon during your stay at Holiday Inn Express in Corydon.

The most famous historical incident for Corydon occurred during the Civil War. The Battle of Corydon occurred on July 9, 1863. The Confederate General John Hunt Morgan confronted and defeated the Union army in this small town. The Confederates raided the town’s treasury for $690 and proceeded to demand money from business owners in the area. This historic battle is commemorated every year in the Battle of Corydon re-enactment. This takes place from July 8-10, 2011. Battles are re-enacted, and families enjoy some old-fashioned fun during the celebration. All-year-round, the site of the battle can be seen at the Battle of Corydon Memorial Park. Holiday Inn Express can recommend several walking tours that have historical significance, such as the John Hunt Morgan walking trail.
