Initially recognized as an Armistice Day by US president Woodrow Wilson, November 11th of 1919 marked the one year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11) in 1918 signified the exact moment the war officially came to an end with the German signing of the peace treaty. Several years and wars later, the celebration of Armistice Day extended to include and honor all veterans. On November 8, 1954, congress officially renamed “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day,” the holiday we all know now. Veterans Day allows us as a nation to give a great big “Thank You” to all those who have served to protect us all. As our current president Barack Obama quotes in his August 17th, 2009 address in Phoenix, Arizona, “We can never say it enough: for your service in war and peace, thank you VFW.”
This annual holiday also gives us the opportunity to recognize our local heroes. Here in Corydon, Indiana, members of the VFW and local community show their respect for those who have fallen and sacrificed their lives courageously by holding a service in their honor at the Cedar Hill Cemetery (at the Veterans Monument).
